Overall
I wrote twenty stories this year, and I'm really proud of that! I learned a lot about my ability to just... write a story without worrying about quality or having the perfect outline. I absolutely love some of the things I wrote, like "Thy Fearful Symmetry," "The Tide is High," and "After the Flood." Weird thing I noticed: I wrote two different stories about cat shapeshifters.
I relied a lot on exchanges for productivity at the beginning of the year - in fact, between gifts and exchanges, I didn't write a single thing just for me until July, with "A Rose for Giorno," which was wonderfully self-indulgent. November was a very productive month, though I think I paid for it with feeling burnt out and depressed in December - but on the other hand, that may have just been a mix of work stress and seasonal depression.
I did make a shift in the fandoms I wrote - moving away from more literary stuff to writing a lot of anime fic. I'm having fun! I'm sad there were some months where I didn't write anything, but usually I had fics in progress at the time - and in March, I moved across the country.
Most popular story
"I Put a Spell on You," with 630 kudos. It was a fic that I wrote in a rush, because I wanted to get it out within two days of the Castlevania show being released. I managed to ride the temporary tsunami of Trevor/Alucard. I'll admit that my investment in the fic was pretty soulless, but I got a good response and I think the fic represents me and my "brand" well enough.
Story most underappreciated by the universe
My least popular fic, "At the Head-waters of the Eternities," has only 9 kudos. I'm not sure why it did so badly, although it was gen fic about a minor character. Most of my Remix fics didn't do well, which was pretty discouraging. Another fic I wrote for Remix, "Sister Midnight," was one that I really liked and I thought it had interesting things to say about Giorno and Gold Experience, but it also flopped.
Oh well.
Most controversial story
I thought I would get yelled at for writing Thorki, but it never happened. Also, no one yelled at me for writing about Giorno cuddling a corpse for five years? Gosh, what's a girl gotta do to get a callout around here!
Hardest story to write?
"In Like a Lion." Writing femslash, particularly the smutty kind, is really hard for me because I still have 20+ years of internalized homophobia to deal with. On top of all that, I wrote most of it when I had the flu and had just started a new job. I honestly can't believe that I didn't default, except I'd defaulted on Smut Swap last year and I was determined not to do it again.
Favorite title?
"Safe Passage Through the Anus." Honorable mention to "Head Like a Haunted House." I went against trend this year and most of my titles were quotes from something else, which I'd normally avoided but for some reason really got into some casual theft.
Favorite line/scene?
From "Sister Midnight," Gold Experience Requiem is two eyes staring from the darkness that is an empty universe. Some favorite scenes included gory Cornelis leaning over Jan in "Thy Fearful Symmetry" and the reveal of Bruno's beautiful corpse in "A Rose for Giorno." I also always laugh at Octavia's line from "Like Real People Do," Pay no attention to the spiders coming out of my nipples. I think I did really well on the sex scenes for "The Tide is High" and "Cat's out of the Bag."
Favorite character to write about this year
BRUNO. I wrote the most words about him and I wanna write more words about him. God, I love sad traumatized criminals who become tragic zombies, and Bruno has this.... weirdness to him that compliments my style.
Looking back, did you write more stories than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Yeah, I wrote way more than I thought I would! I wish that I'd spent time working on an original novel, though, and I wish I'd worked even more consistently.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted? What fic didn't you expect to write?
I did NOT expect that my burst of activity towards the end of the year would be all thanks to anime. I don't think that any of the fics themselves are surprising from me, though. I think I kept very true to what I'm good at this year, with a few exceptions.
Story that could have been better?
I wish "Making Do" had been better, but I also don't think that a PWP like that *could* be better? I guess I did OK on it.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote FAST. A lot of my stories were written within 1-3 days, and I don't think that they seem significantly different from the stories I took more time with.
Fics you wanted to write but didn't
I still want to write a sequel to "The Tide is High" where Abbacchio pretends to be a Tuscan cop and I could call it "Under the Tuscan Gun."
I ended up abandoning the Fandom 5k fic I started, about a wily king and a handsome young general. I just wasn't feeling it and I was stressed out with moving/new job.
If Castlevania fandom hadn't died so quickly, I would've written a long Hector/Isaac post-canon fic where Isaac rescues Hector and they slowly fall in love.
What's next for 2019
Hopefully a lot of fics for MDZS! And some more original work, dammit. I also want to write at least one more JJBA fic.
